ÇANAKKALE TOWN SQUARE AND ITS ENVIRONMENT URBAN DESIGN – FIRST PRIZE AWARD

First prize winner of the 2013 Çanakkale Municipality National Urban Design Competition, this project comprehensively reconfigures the entire coastal strip encompassing Cumhuriyet and İskele squares. The central question: how can the waterfront of a historically significant coastal city be transformed into a space that is both genuinely public and authentically its own? The answer was a graduated hierarchy of public spaces that does not disturb the historic fabric yet generates intense everyday use. The square was connected to the city's green axis, making it the focus of daily urban life. Sustainable materials and a climate-responsive landscape language lend the project ecological coherence.
